Congratulations to the 2012 Great Americans!

68 of Brandon’s fifth graders have worked extremely hard over the past few months to be named a Great American!  This is a voluntary program, and in order to earn this achievement, fifth graders must memorize and recite the Gettysburg Address, the 44 Presidents in order, the Preamble to the Constitution, the Star-Spangled Banner, write the Pledge of Allegiance and label a U.S. map with the 50 states and their capitals!  The kids celebrated with a picnic lunch with pizza donated by Johnny’s New York Pizza and an after school party provided by Mighty Jumps.  Many thanks to these Business Partners for their generous support!

This year's Great Americans are: Matt Aspinwall, Katherine Atkinson, Cecie Bassett, Elizabeth Becker, John Bell, Catherine Brennan, Bay Brickley, Brooks Buckelew, Julian Cave, Avery Culp, Anna Cykoski, Vincent DeLorenzo, Alex Early, Tess Eichenlaub, Nicholas Eller, Sam Ferguson, Tate Few, Ralston Flores, Will Formisano, Andrew Friedman, Colie Gfroerer, Quint Gfroerer, Ishan Ghosh, Wilson Glasgow, Mary Charles Hamilton, Tripp Hammond, Noelle Hoke, Klara Houck, Graham Humphreys, Alex Hwang, Chosen Jacobs, Jake Jameson, Shelby Jordan, Charlie Kaye, Christine Kim, Colin Legg, Alex Levine, Kenson Marbut, Thomas Marsden, Leah Mautner, Maysie Morgan, Frannie Motley, Max Muir, Bryce Mutz, Drew Norman, Callie Perciful, Grant Pinkston, Lizzie Portwood, Kate Pritchard, Will Rautenstrauch, Bryan Reed, Anna Marie Rosse, Elizabeth Rothschild, Ansley Schipper, Drew Sheldon, David Shepherd, Merritt Smith, Ratul Sultan, Margaret Taylor, Jack Thomson, Lacy Thompson, Nicholas Tranakos, Anna Wallace, Lila Ward, Charlie Warren, Jeanne Werner, Katie Wessinger, and Will Zook.

Dear Parents,

Can you believe our Bees are 5th graders and entering their last year in the hive? Get ready for a fun and fast moving 5th grade year.

We are co-chairs of this year's 5th grade committee. Our committee will help plan, organize and facilitate many of the activities, events and field trips that make up the 5th grade experience.
We will depend on every 5th grader and family to pitch in to help make this a great year.

The main purposes of the committee are:

- to act as a support system for the 5th grade teachers
- to-help plan and organize activities and field trips during the year including Jekyll island field trip (Oct. 5-7) and end of year celebration
- to raise funds for all the activities during the year with fun activities like the car wash and bake sales.
- to be a source of information for all 5th grade parents to guide you through the what, where, when, and- how...

Please mark your calendars for Thursday, September 8 at 6:30pm for our 5th grade Parent Information Night. This will be an important meeting as we'll cover many more details of the coming year after the teachers cover the 5th grade curriculum.

We look forward to a great 5th grade year for all of our senior bees!

JEKYLL ISLAND 2011

October 5 - 7

The overnight trip to Jekyll Island has become a special part of the 5th grade year at Brandon.  The 4-H Center on Jekyll Island, Georgia, is located at the south end of the island in an area rich in diversity of native plants and undisturbed habitats, ideal for education.  Endorsed by the Georgia Department of Education, it is the largest Residential Environmental Education Program in the nation and supports the APS 5th grade Earth Sciences curriculum.  Instructors use hands-on teaching methods proven to improve test scores and student motivation.  Classroom relationships and interpersonal skill also are improved through team building and group initiative activities.

All students are encouraged to attend the Jekyll Island Overnight Field Trip to learn vital environmental and social skills as members of our 5th grade team.   The classes taught on the trip are an integral part of the 5th grade Earth Sciences curriculum.  Students who do not attend will be expected to report to school both days and will be supervised as they complete activities assigned by the teachers.  Please talk to your student’s homeroom teacher if you have any concerns about this overnight trip.

Here’s what we need from you, no later than October 4:

  1. Read the attached information and contact your child’s teacher with any questions.
  2. Read and sign the permission slip.
  3. The all-inclusive cost of the trip is $210 per student.  Please make a check payable to Morris Brandon PTA or, to pay via paypal, go to www.morrisbrandon .com, click on the Classroom News Link, and then 5th grade News.  We want everyone to attend.  If the cost of the trip poses a hardship to your family, please contact your child’s teacher to discuss scholarships.
  4. Return the permission slip and your payment, if by check, via the Bee Box in the school lobby.

All information and forms are posted on the Morris Brandon Website, www.morrisbrandon.com, under classroom news.  This is a fabulous trip which your children will treasure for years.   If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or any of us.
