2nd Quarter Update
Greetings, Brandon Families!
Now that we are in to the 2nd quarter of the school year, let me take a moment to update everyone on some important happenings around school as well as our focus areas.
By now, everyone has had the opportunity to conference with their teacher and has received the first report card of the year. Please be reminded that elementary school grades are cumulative, so no grade is “final” until the end of the school year. I am proud of the work teachers are engaged in this year in partnership with the administrative team to really make data-based instructional decisions and to commit to ensuring that all students are being reached regardless of their academic level. It is very hard work to tailor instruction to individual student needs, but this is the level of work we are engaged in. When we do this well across the board, this will be “intentionally exemplary” work. I know you already know how hard Brandon teachers work for students, but if you could see the behind the scenes thought, collaboration, and action, you would be really impressed! I am thankful for the tireless work of our teachers, and I know you are too!
You also have likely noticed that we talk a lot about student attendance. Thank you for understanding how student attendance impacts our overall school rating and student achievement. We absolutely know that students get sick and things come up that prevent students from coming to school, and that is ok! We simply do not want to decline in our daily student attendance rate, have our school rating negatively impacted in this area, or, most importantly, have student attendance be an obstacle to student achievement. To this end, we do send notifications home to keep you up-to-date on your child’s attendance after 3 days of absence. The great news is that our daily student attendance rate continues to improve, and this is thanks to you! Thank you!
Finally, I hope that you will continue to follow the district level news about the conversion of the district to a Charter System for the 2016-2017 school year. This decision comes with increased flexibility for local schools and clusters, and I am excited to be a part of this. It also comes with the opportunity for parents to serve on a Local School Governance Team. It is a good move for the district and our school. We continue to post resources to the “Bee Informed” section of the website so you can review the latest information at your leisure. The Atlanta Public Schools website is also a great source of information on this topic.
Thank you for your continued involvement, investment, and collaboration! It is through our partnership with our parents that we are able to continue to provide an excellent education “on purpose”! Thank you for partnering with us on this journey.
