Welcome Back to 2nd Semester!
Greetings, Brandon Families!
Happy New Year and welcome back to the 2nd semester of the 2015-2016 school year! With this letter, I’d like to recap some of our work from first semester and provide you with a look ahead at the rest of the year.
The month of January marks a time in the academic year when we use benchmark assessments to measure student learning progress to date. Students will take STAR Assessments in Reading and Math as well as the Computer Adaptive Assessment in Reading and Math this month. You will receive reports from you teachers, as you did in August, with your child’s progress. This data helps our teachers to tailor and adjust their instruction accordingly.
In the first half of this year, there has been a lot of work going on around both campuses from a facilities perspective. We are thrilled with the progress being made on the Primary Center expansion. That project remains on schedule, so we will be ready to transition to a K-2 and a 3-5 campus arrangement next school year. This semester, we will spend time ensuring the space is ready and reviewing all PC operations to ensure we are ready to house and serve up to an additional 200 students. This could mean changes to some routines at the PC, and we will work on finalizing and communicating those to you over the course of the next several months. I hope you will support us in our efforts to build an additional playground at the PC as well to help us accommodate the additional students. Play in the primary years is so important!! At the Main Campus, I hope you’ve seen the ongoing and almost completed construction of a beautiful outdoor classroom structure. Come take a look in the Main Campus backyard!
You have also likely heard about a conversation we began last semester about Dual Language Immersion. We have been studying and researching the potential benefits and implications of bringing Dual Language Immersion to Brandon. As of today, we are moving forward with plans to begin a Dual Language Immersion cohort with our Kindergarten class next school year. More details will come about how rising Kindergarten students can join this cohort during the spring registration season. While we have not yet determined the language that will be offered, we have narrowed the selection to either Spanish or Mandarin Chinese. We hope to solidify this decision after some more information gathering this month and will communicate the direction at that time.
Finally, I hope that you will continue to follow the district level news about the conversion of the district to a Charter System for the 2016-2017 school year. This comes with the opportunity for parents to serve on a Local School Governance Team or GO Team. Please consider running for a seat on this team! Elections will be held in March. We continue to post resources to the “Bee Informed” section of the website so you can review the latest information at your leisure. The Atlanta Public Schools website is also a great source of information on this topic.
Thank you for your continued involvement, investment, and collaboration! It is through our partnership with our parents that we are able to continue to provide an excellent education “on purpose”! Thank you for partnering with us on this journey.
