May is in Full Swing!!

Greetings Parents and Community Members! While the countdown is on, there is still so much to discuss, so much information to share and so much news to celebrate within our Brandon community! Our Main Campus students in grades 3 and 5 have been absolutely fantastic during the first wave of Milestone testing. What impresses me the most is how mentally prepared our students are! There have been little to no absences, students are coming to school on time, and the testing sessions have been pretty much flawless with little to no technology issues or other factors that can affect the testing window. While that’s happening at MC, our PC students are busy continuing with learning and instruction! The Spring Star window is now over and we are able to get an excellent glimpse of how our students grew compared to others just like them – from the August testing window in 2018 all the way to the May window in 2019. Even though there are only a few weeks left in school, our students are still learning, growing, and participating in all of the great instructional activities their teachers have to offer because there are no days off at Brandon!

This past week was no exception to the amazing events that take place every day within our school system and community. My twitter feed was DOMINATED by Morris Brandon’s participation in the first-ever APS Rocks’ N Run 5k at Brown Middle School. Out of every school in APS, our neighborhood school brought more teachers and staff than any other school or APS department! It was so cool to see our team running in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week. The staff engagement and teacher buy-in are at an all-time high! Aside from that, this past week included:

  • Awesome activities in Ms. Klibanoff’s 1st grade DLI class. I loved seeing where her students started the year reading short stories and finished the year reading chapter books! They also had time to incorporate some STEAM activates as her class participated in a paper airplane competition!
  • Ms. Halliday’s KK DLI class celebrated their Wit and Wisdom module 4 entitled “The Continents” by having families in her class share their stories from where they are from. They created anchor charts (to help with the learning process) and even created their very own passports. This is reading and ELA at its finest!
  • Our primary center continued to get all sorts of educational experiences as the MC tested away.  They were paid a visit from author Jonathon Miller, who wrote “Sammy the Wonder Dachshund,” and were paid a visit from a mobile zoo! Students got a great dose of hands-on learning fun as they learned about reptiles. They were even able to hold snakes and lizards!
  • And, lastly, we continue to celebrate our teachers during National Teacher Appreciation Week! I have to give a special shout-out to few in particular. Michelle Kemp, 3rd grade teacher, finished a rigorous Aspiring Leadership Program through APS and was recognized by her peers as being an amazing aspiring leader. Our staff also nominated 3 teachers to be our APyeS Teacher of the Year Finalists. Dr. Opal Knowlton (1st), Colleen Harron (5th) and Jill Stansbury (5th) were all nominated by multiple people, observed by our Teacher of the Year committee, and were scored using a rubric as outlined by the Definitions of Teaching Excellence set forth by APS. In the end, Jill Stansbury is Brandon’s 2018/2019 Teacher of the Year! She also won a contest sponsored by Georgia’s Own Credit Union by being recognized as the top teacher in APS by parents, students and peers alike, earning her money to be spent in her classroom!

There are still a ton of events happening before the year is out – Special Olympics, Field Day, 5th  Grade Promotion, NA Senior Walk, and Splash Down to name a few. I continue to look forward to putting a strong finish to an even stronger year.

Until next time, let’s celebrate our teachers!
