What’s new around our hive

I can’t believe it’s already the 3rd week of February! As promised, I will continue to send my bi-monthly newsletter the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month, so be on the lookout! So much has happened since my last Buzz. We kicked off our annual Read-a-Thon week with an assembly at both campuses with a great presentation from a visiting author. Our students had a chance to hear and learn from Ms. Sue Seghal who read one of her books to our entire school. The students were thoroughly engaged as they learned and read about Holi, the Indian Holiday celebrating love, colors and, of course, Spring! It was a great segue into our upcoming International Travelers Week where we will be visiting India! The media centers were busier than ever as students and parents alike purchased books for students, staff and teachers at the Scholastic Book Fair and then checked out books to read during Read-A-Thon.

Thank you SO much to all of the volunteers who helped out during this busy time! Additionally, to support our reading efforts, Tablet2Read info packets went home to all of our 1st and 2nd grade parents with the option to OPT OUT of taking their device home, so be sure to return the form if you wish to leave it at school. I was also excited to host my 3rd Principal Coffee Talk of the year last Friday around the Sutton Middle School experience. Principal Gail Johnson joined over 25 parents in our Main Campus Media Center and discussed everything from extra-curricular clubs, gifted rigor and class placement, the Cougar premier and the Summer Bridge Program as well as their efforts to prepare for our DLI students. She even touched upon transportation, cell phones and their digital device policy. Our parents had amazing questions and Ms. Johnson did a great job answering them! The meeting was videotaped and a link will be shared with our community in the coming week. Our teachers continue to participate in meaningful professional development to help build their toolbox. Last week, a group of our 5th grade teachers traveled to Houston for an IB Exhibition workshop. I was amazed by the positive feedback, energy and ideas they brought back to our staff. Additionally, a group of our teachers continued with their Complete Reading Series sessions with Focus on Phonics, a four day professional development hosted by the Galloway School as well as Understanding Dyslexia, hosted by Morningside ES. Both sessions were facilitated by reading expert Brenda Fitzgerald. None of this could be possible without your support and of course, our Morris Brandon Foundation!!  One of the best announcements we’ve had since my last Buzz was from the APS counseling department.  On Presidents Day, while our students were home enjoying some time off, our very own counselor, Ms. Whitaker won Atlanta Public Schools Counselor of the Year for all Elementary Schools- over 40 in total!  We love the work Ms. Whitaker does everyday to support the social and emotional well-being of our students and staff. If you see her, be sure to say a big CONGRATULATIONS!

I look forward to the weeks that are ahead as we make our way into March. All Pro Dads had their first meeting this morning at the Primary Center, there will be a Dual Language Immersion prospective parent meeting at Sutton on 2/26 followed by a NAPPS meeting on responsible use of technology, we will have our final GOTeam budget approval meeting on March 5th, and Jump Rope for Heart is right around the corner!

As always, we will continue to strive to bring out the best in our school, our staff and our students each and everyday so please help us out by ensuring your children are at school, on time, and ready to learn.

Until next time!
